Q Magazine Double Page Spread

STANDFIRST
Above the main text on the double page spread there is a standfirst. The font of this standfirst is in a bigger font than the actual text which helps it stands out and catches the reader’s eye which will persuade them to read the article. The standfirst is also in red, and the artists name before it in highlighted in yellow, this portrays that the double page spread is following Q’s house style by using red, black, white and yellow which is very conventional. This connotes to the reader that this article is going to be written in a sophisticated way for someone who is serious about music to read. The reader is likely going to be well educated as the language used is expected to be formal due to the conventions used at the start which would appeal and be noticed by those who are more highly educated.

DROP CAP
The drop cap is a bold, capital, white ‘T’ in a red box, which again follows Q’s house style of red, black, yellow and white. The red box is the same depth down as 5 normal lines of the text, so very boldly stands out. Again, the convention used will help attract readers to read this article.

PULL QUOTE

A pull quote is used on the second page of text which states “I was on tour, drinking too much and going off the rails.” The fact that this quote is quite a personal statement from the artist, Ellie Goulding, helps get and keep the reader’s attention because it allows the reader to emotionally engage with her. The font is a lot larger than not only the regular text, but also the standfirst and drop cap as well. It is all in capitals and bold too as well as being in a different font to everything else on the page. This dramatic contrast means that this line will be one of, if not the first thing the reader will see when they look at this double page spread, therefore Q have carefully chosen such a powerful line that the reader can connect with.
